Klirou: 20 April

Our walk on Saturday, 20 April is a new one, with several outstanding features: – it is only 30 km from Nicosia; – it is less than 10 km long; – it goes beside a river for a short way then goes through pine forest to a hilltop with great views over Nicosia and the mountains beyond; – it is mostly off-trail, showing Cyprus at its best, but is easy to walk, with very few thorns.

Ian will lead this walk, which will start at 10.45 and will take place even in light rain. If rain persists a shorter route will be chosen. The way is circular and has a degree of difficulty 3, because it is off-trail. The length and elevation are not difficult. Shorts must not be worn, and thick trousers, e.g. jeans, are best. Walking poles are advisable, also a waterproof jacket and change of clothing. If you have questions please call Ian on 96852722.

Afterwards, a taverna lunch will be provided; details will be announced at the hike start. Those who wish to dine must register first, only by contacting Ian via sms, by end of Thursday. Please no e-mails to Xenophon for this event. If you do not intend to join us for lunch, no need to register, just turn up.

The start point has coordinates 34.99464, 33.160635. The trail can be found on Wikilic as “Cyprus Trailfinders 1”.

We will meet at the church of tis Theou Sophias (aka Agia Sophia) in Strovolos (35.147606, 33.334814) to arrange car-sharing (to save the environment), and leave at 9.45.

At the 10.9 km reading you reach the principal junction of Karvounas (note, no traffic lights). Do not go straight, downhill (this takes you to Kakopetria). Do not turn left (this takes you to Troodos square). Turn right, signposted to Pitsilia region. Drive through and out of the villages of Kyperounda, Handria and Agros. The next village you pass is Palekhori. A few km past Palekhori (in the direction of Nicosia) look out for the right turn onto the F962 and drive for 1.5 km, following signs to Klirou, across the river and up the hill.
