The very large gathering of Strollers at Galata and Kakopetria, two popular villages, opened up and took in a sequence of experiences; from a thorough description of the iconography of two 16 c. churches on the Unesco heritage list, to the mesmerizing rich flow of river Clarios, and the rewarding meal. Aided by the forecast of no rain, everybody enjoyed the hike around Mandra Kampiou, in a pine forest, crossing streams, stopping at ruins and chatting. There were Strollers of all ages, regulars and newcomers, and many nationalities. Compliments to Antonis for leading the day, and to Anna for the photos. They say luck accompanies those who dare. The weather odds were negative on 14 January, yet a good number of Strollers chose to hike for a full 3 hours and climb up to Aetomoutti (Greek for summit of eagles): as if by miracle, there was light rain only for a few minutes, then fog. The reward was the rich meal and the sharing of the Club’s Vasilopita, which came with 3 prizes, for the 3 lucky winners. Compliments to all participants, for the unparalleled spirit of camaraderie, adeptly summarized by Martin with these words: ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, there is only inappropriate clothing’. The first walk of 2023 to start off Cyprus Strollers season 18 was a gentle return to hiking after the Christmas and New Year’s break.
The large group of hikers bore the well-known Strollers signature: multiple nationalities, all ages. In perfect weather, we walked along wide trails with the hills of Larnaca in the distance on the one side and pine forests on the other, mixing beautiful views with easy conversation as veteran Strollers got to know newcomers.
As always, the day’s outing ended with a generous spread of Cyprus meze favourites for all taste preferences, before members shared their thoughts about the joys, benefits and privileges of experiencing nature and enjoying such an abundant meal in good company.
