On Sunday 3 July 2022, in the early afternoon, a glacier in the Italian Dolomites broke off, causing the loss of the lives of 10 hikers. The incident was one more outcome of the ongoing phenomenon of global warming. This Club deplores the general lack of determination by the world powers, to reach consensus on an urgent corrective plan. We need actions, not declarations, from those in power.
The glacier had progressively become unstable, and the poor snow season last winter precipitated its collapse. Italian authorities had measured the loss of about 30% of the volume of glaciers, over a period of 10 years. The emerging picture is that glaciers have become too dangerous to explore on foot.

The Cyprus Strollers 
Thanks Xenophon for raising again the issue of climate and the environment. We all need to be aware of the effects our actions (or inaction) have in our life and the future of this place, our earth. On a similar note it is with sorrow that I read in the paper-news of plans to develop Troodos in a way that would create another built-up are like Ayia Napa. Troodos, like Akamas is one of the most beautiful areas where nature is not yet spoiled and should be preserved for all to enjoy, not to mention of its importance to Cyprus climate.
Thank you, Nicos, for your appreciation and observations. Troodos may not be as breath taking as a mountain range with glaciers. But it is the pride of Cyprus and this Club and must remain far from the hands of money-hungry so-called ‘developers’.
