Well-deserved kick-off to Season 23 – Prodromos 4 Oct.

A wonderful gathering of Strollers, thirsty for a hike in a dense forest following the hot summer hiatus, thoroughly enjoyed Zoumi and Stavroulia on 4 October. There were regular members, newcomers and also friends who came back. Compliments to Elena and Petros for the photos. Missed this double pleasure? There are another 11 events coming up. While life appears burdened with more and more hardships, isn’t it comforting that some things remain unchanged? Among them, elements which characterize the Cyprus Strollers as a unique hiking club:

  • Commitment to first-class planning and organization
  • Excursions alternate between Saturdays and Sundays, thus appealing to more people
  • Dedicated website, fully informed, and well in advance
  • Our caring, multinational character; we are open to Strollers of any nationality, both permanent residents, as well as visitors to the island
  • Well-chosen tavernas, serving us very good value meals at reasonable prices, because we honour them with our loyalty
  • Wit, humour and sparkle around the lunch table.

The Cyprus Strollers are committed to “Hiking made Pleasant”, and we invite you to contribute and enjoy the many rewards.

Politics vs Forests – thoughts from the Fires

Apart from ashes, the recent fires in Limassol district (23-25 July) have exposed organizational and structural problems in fire prevention and fire fighting, long known, yet unresolved. This Club has written about them in an article published in The Cyprus Weekly newspaper on 1 July 2016 (see pdf). The President and the Finance Minister have changed, the approach on the critical issues remains unconvincing. Action need be taken to remedy understaffing, stipulate coordination between cooperating departments, and modernize the pre-emption campaign. Because it is not sufficient that life goes on, we must demonstrate that we can come out of a catastrophe wiser.

Fires in Limassol district 2 days out of control – 23, 24 July

This is not a happy posting. This is not an invitation to join a hike. This is a loud cry, your cry and my cry, for the tragic fires continuing to burn over 125 km2 of precious land, including built-up areas, in Limassol district. With fire fighting in full deployment by all responsible forces, victims and observers alike recognize the frailty of our earth and human existence.

Take this survey, tell us what you think

Sweet Season end – Platania 1 June

On 1st June the Club completed 11 years of hiking and a worthy gathering of Strollers from 8 nationalities enjoyed the hike and the lunch treat, with a delicious cake wrapping Season 22 up. Compliments to Michael, Nicos, Elena, Maria and Petros for the photos. Best wishes for the summer to all.

Heroes on Atalanti – 25 May

Birds singing accompanied our path. The highlight came near the end, on the north slopes, with the singing of cuckoos. Then a rich variety and quantity of dishes at lunch was the compensation Strollers deserved on a hot 25 May at Atalanti. Except perhaps for our feet, since everyone went back feeling they needed a foot bath of magnesium sulphate. Compliments to Maria for the photos. Orchids galore – Platania 17 May

A record incidence of orchids (Limodorum abortivum) and the non-stop singing of birds provided ample rewards on the hike at Platania on a hot 17 May. Don’t miss our next event on Sunday 25 May, on the most charming circle atop Troodos, and book early please for the rich lunch after https://cyprus-strollers.org/activities-description/troodos-atalanti-circle-25-may-2/

Butterflies poses – Pedoulas 11 May

Several types of butterflies accompanied the hike of 11 May at Xylogefyro over its entire duration, and even posed for us on branches. Which added to our cheerful mood and stimulated our discussions, while hiking and dining. Compliments to Nicos for leading the day, and to Nicoletta and Petros for the photos. Bold and Beautiful on Madari – 3 May

There were no thunderstorms as forecast; just non-stop rain on Madari on 3 May. Which the gathering of bold Strollers tackled suitably, with a feeling of positive attitude dominant throughout, as well as over lunch. Participants felt that it was efforts such as this that turn mundane life into instances of sparkling and lasting experiences and memories. After all was said and done, Elena summed it up in 3 simple words: What a Day! Compliments to Martin for leading the Grand Circle and to Elena and Petros for the photos.
