Strollers with Sense and Sensibility – Pitsilia Hike 2 April

A small group of Strollers displayed exemplary sense and sensibility on Saturday 2 April concerning the picturesque hike from Stavros Agiasmati to Panagia Araka. Defying the forecast of rain, and comfortable with the driving instructions, we were all appropriately prepared and copiously rewarded, since rain fell in Nicosia and Limassol, but there was not a drop on our path; proof of the general rule that luck is on the side of those who dare. Among the delights of the outing we had several instances of flowering orchids, Arabis purpurea, asphodels, milk vetch and almond trees; carpets of vivid green mosses and masses of tiny yellow-blue wild peas. There were also amazing vistas; at every turn the views changed; sometimes we were looking at sheer rocks, sometimes thick forest, then the distant bay of Morphou, the majestic Madari mountains and the villages of Platanistasa, Alona on the left, Lagoudera and Saranti on the right, nestling below the peaks. The meal at Fountoukia taverna was a well-deserved treat, with delicious and seemingly endless meze dishes, their potato chips which rank among the best on the island, and creamy sweets to finish off an unforgettable day. Compliments to Mary for contributing to this write-up and to Marios for the photos. Probably the Most Youthful Hiking Club – Madari Hike 22 Oct.

The Cyprus Strollers were brimming with freshness and youthfulness once more, on the hike of Saturday 22 October on Madari, from Selladi to Doxa si o Theos and back. Not only did we feature probably the youngest Walk leader among all hiking clubs, we also had two young boys setting the pace, in front. These elements, alongside the captivating forest scenery, the long views, and the good weather conditions created a memorable experience. Furthermore, we traced the first cyclamens of the season and spotted a tree trunk undergoing peeling. The assortment of dishes at Fountoukia taverna at the end was the perfect reward every Stroller deserved. Compliments to Christos for leading, and to Lowell and Teresa for sharing their photos. Join us on 30 Oct. on the Persephone trail.

Perfect weather – Optimal performance: Madari Grand Circle 8 May

A large, committed group of Strollers accepted the challenge of the hardest hike of the year on Sunday 8 May. The perfect weather conditions – cool, cloudy, with a brief spell of rain – helped our performance and we completed the Grand Circle of Madari in record time. Rewards were plentiful: beautiful orchids, a carpet of moss, magnificent forest of cedars, golden oaks and pines and amazing views to Kyperounda village below, Madari summit Watch Station and more. Compliments to Christos for leading this excursion and to Christine and George for the photos. Join us on 14 May on Amiantos.

A Wonderful Hike, along the Vineyards, 11 Oct.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable hike on 11 October, at Selladi Karamanli, in Pitsilia. We walked along a dirt road, which cuts across the rich vineyards, met local farmers picking their crop, who generously offered the group bunches of grapes. We enjoyed the exercise, the views, and the meal at the taverna. It was a very large gathering and the Cyprus Strollers welcomed many newcomers. Compliments to Amanda, for the photos.
