2015 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 26,000 times in 2015. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 10 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Fantastic Outing – Troodos, Atalanti 8 Nov.

There was a large turnout on Troodos on Sunday 8 November, for the Atalanti trail. The Strollers had a fantastic experience. The weather started sunny, then some clouds gathered, which produced a light rain, during the light rain there was a very short spell of hail, and we concluded in dry weather, with the sun out again. The colours of autumn added to the joyful atmosphere, with all sorts of hues, from green to yellow to reddish and brown in the trees and bushes. The group picked up litter, urged by Ian, our caring walk leader. Compliments to Amanda, Alex and Koula for the photos. See you on Sat. 14th at Kornos

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Hike, Teisia on Madari, 17 Oct.

A lively group of Strollers had a most enjoyable walk in a forest of golden oak on Madari, on 17 October, viewing from very close the centuries-old erect Teisia geological structures and panoramic scenery. The expedition was concluded with a superb value meal and a humorous spirit prevailing, at the Kyperia taverna in Kyperounda. Compliments to Koula and Alex for the photos.

A song for the Cyprus Strollers

It has been proven, via research by several US universities, that hiking promotes creativity. On the ‘Madari Grand Circle’ hike of 19 April, a song for the Cyprus Strollers was born. The song is sang to the tune of “When the Saints go marching in”. Read the lyrics and comment. Better still, join us in one of our upcoming excursions and sing along…

We are the Strollers, the Cyprus Strollers,

We are the Strollers hiking for fun,

We are hiking and singing,

The Cyprus Strollers hiking for fun

When the Strollers, the Cyprus Strollers,

When the Strollers go hiking up,

They will reach a summit,

The Cyprus Strollers go hiking up

The Cyprus Strollers

If you are new or fairly new to Cyprus, welcome to Cyprus. If you are a permanent resident, you are equally welcome. The Cyprus Strollers is for everyone who loves life outdoors and wants to:

  • Get some exercise at the weekend
  • Explore the city paths of Nicosia and the Cyprus countryside
  • Meet people and make new friends.

The Cyprus Strollers is a new hiking club, based in Nicosia, starting operation in Autumn 2014. There is an activity practically every weekend, from October to May. Activities alternate between Saturdays and Sundays, in order to facilitate a larger number of people.

Some walks last two to three hours and follow fairly easy routes or routes of medium difficulty. Other walks are shorter; they last between 1 ½ – 2 hours and are designed to better accommodate family members and friends who want to join the Strollers, but walk less. In addition, this club organizes a few all-day excursions. Each walk announcement includes reference to the degree of difficulty. The majority of walks are suitable for people with a good health, a good heart and a good physical fitness. Some others last over 3 hours and involve more strenuous exercise which includes uphill climbing. These are given a degree of difficulty 3 rating and are addressed to hikers who have tested their ability in similar circumstances before and have a very good health and fitness.

Kids and dogs are welcome.

Each walk is conducted and led by an experienced hiker. Each walk ends with an (optional) meal at a taverna, or a picnic.

There is no membership fee to join the Cyprus Strollers and no charge is made for the walks. Your only cost is what you pay for your meal.

The list of venues planned includes Nicosia Old City, Athalassa and Pedieos in Nicosia, the Troodos mountain range, the Pitsilia/ Madari mountain range, the Mahairas mountain range, the Adelphi mountain range, the Larnaca Salt Lake, and elsewhere. Most walks require only a short drive outside Nicosia city.

There are pleasant, small surprises in store for hikers, practically on every outing. These include the singing of birds, sighting of birds and butterflies, spotting of rare flowers, panoramic views from hilltops. Add to these the conversations you can have with other hikers from different backgrounds, who have the same love as you for the outdoors and enjoy the physical exercise hiking offers. At the core of the Cyprus Strollers is a belief in the dual benefit of exercise and companionship.

To get the instructions about our next walk, visit https://cyprus-strollers.org/activities-description/. Information for each walk includes detailed directions to the walk start, and a map, where possible.

Adhering to the meeting time and start time announced is vital. To help you in this, instructions published provide detailed information on how to get to the walk start. Instructions are based on kilometres count and for this you need to use your car odometer. If your car does not have an odometer, simply make a written note of the kilometre reading on your driver’s panel when the instructions ask you to zero your odometer, and count kilometres from that reading, according to the instructions. You are strongly advised to a) print out instructions and have them with you in your car, b) use your odometer, as instructed: this is the most reliable method to use, and the only safe one when in doubt.
