Join the Cyprus Strollers on Saturday 12 September 2015, on an extraordinary hike on the Pedieos river trail. The activity marks our club’s contribution to a European Week of Sport, from 7 to 13 Sept., aiming to promote sport and physical activity across Europe, under the slogan #BEACTIVE. The Week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. Consequently, the Pedieos hike is easy and an excellent opportunity for anyone considering taking up hiking, to test themselves. For this event, The Cyprus Strollers cooperate with the Cyprus Mountaineering, Sport Climbing and Orienteering Federation. Visit the Activities Description section for full instructions.

Love in the Summer
Memorable finale to this season’s Hikes – Platres Caledonian Waterfall, 31 May
A large group of Strollers took part in the excursion of 31 May, the last scheduled hike for the season January – May 2015. There were Strollers from 7 nationalities and 4 continents, giving the Cyprus Strollers a truly international identity. We hiked along Kryos Potamos river, all the way up from Platres to Troodos and back. The weather was idyllic, with clouds offering protection from the sun, later a few minutes of light rain, and then a beautiful mist. The outing ended with a full meze meal in a taverna. Compliments to Christos for leading the walk and Alex for the photos. Many thanks to Chrysi and Despina for choosing to surprise Xenophon with a delicious chocolate gateau, to celebrate one year of the club’s activities!
Troodos Prodromos Excellent Stroll 23 May
This penultimate stroll for the season, on 23 May on Troodos Prodromos, was extremely rewarding, in terms of exercise, scenery, the forest of pine and golden oak, companionship and the meal at the taverna. Some clouds and the density of the forest ensured that the sun was manageable. Strollers were further rewarded with views of a few Limodorum abortivum plants, a rare orchid that can disappear for several years during periods of drought, and then it reappears when conditions become more favourable (http://www.first-nature.com/flowers/limodorum-abortivum.php). Compliments to Barbara, our Botany expert and member of the Athens Strollers, for identifying the orchid species. Compliments to Marina and Amanda for the photos.
Hot Strollers climb on Mahairas Kakokefalos 17 May
On a hot Sunday, a brave group of Cyprus Strollers climbed from Mandra tou Kampiou to Kakokefalos summit and back. Even though the entire hike was in the forest of Mahairas, much of the trail was exposed to the sun, and there was not a single cloud. In terms of flowers, there was an abundance of rock rose (xistarka) and also several lavenders (lavandula, known in Cyprus as myrophora). Compliments to Despina, Alex and George for the photos.
A Delightful Hike on Troodos Atalanti, 9 May
The Cyprus Strollers are proud of their international outlook and appeal. Strollers from 7 nationalities and 3 continents shaped the wonderful group of Cyprus Strollers on Saturday 9 May. We hiked the 14 km of Atalanti trail on Troodos in ideal weather conditions, in the forest made up mainly of cedar, juniper and pine trees, and one
very unusual and healthy pine tree formation.
Strollers 1st hike in Marathasa, 3 May
On Sunday 3 May the Cyprus Strollers conducted their first ever hike in the Marathasa area. The trail took place on the hills above the village of Gerakies, famous for its production of the local sweet soutzioukkos, made from grape juice and almonds. We climbed as high as 1100 m altitude and concluded with a picnic at Xerargaka picnic site. Apart from the usual pleasures, we encountered a chameleon and passed by almond trees bearing their fresh fruit. Compliments to Amanda, Despina and Alex for the photos.
Two Hikes – Double the Pleasure for the Strollers on Mahairas, 25 April
The excursion of Saturday 25 April covered 2 hikes, near one another, on the south slopes of Mahairas; nature was at its best, the weather fine and the pleasure double. The encounter of the cave was a not-so-common experience. The picnic at Kionia offered a large variety of tastes, to wrap-up the day. Compliments to Yiannis for the cave photo.
A song for the Cyprus Strollers
It has been proven, via research by several US universities, that hiking promotes creativity. On the ‘Madari Grand Circle’ hike of 19 April, a song for the Cyprus Strollers was born. The song is sang to the tune of “When the Saints go marching in”. Read the lyrics and comment. Better still, join us in one of our upcoming excursions and sing along…
We are the Strollers, the Cyprus Strollers,
We are the Strollers hiking for fun,
We are hiking and singing,
The Cyprus Strollers hiking for fun
When the Strollers, the Cyprus Strollers,
When the Strollers go hiking up,
They will reach a summit,
The Cyprus Strollers go hiking up
An Outstanding Hike – Madari Grand Circle, 19 April
A courageous team of Strollers, from 5 nationalities, performed the Grand Circle of Madari on Sunday 19 April, to perfection! The hike took 6 hours, including the picnic. The weather was sunny throughout. The vegetation was abundant and splendid; the trees (pine, golden oak, cedar, strawberry) provided shade in many places, while the flowers (incl. orchids) offered a beautiful palette of colours. Compliments to Chistos for the photos.
